Welcome, friends, to the July update from Breathing Better Living Well!

Big Red, Michigan lighthouse on Great LakesA friendly hello from Holland, Michigan and Big Red, one of the more famous lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Here it is, in all its summer glory! It no longer has to light the way for passing ships, but it is enough for us to remind us that we’re close to home.

You know, computers are great and being online can be wonderful. Weneed to be connected, and that’s why we’re here at BBLW. Yet, sometimes don’t you wonder if you’re the only one visiting a certain web page, or how many people are really out there looking at that same page? Are you the only one who really likes (or doesn’t like) what you see or read?

Well, this month I’m going to tell you how you can to let us know what you think of our site, and in turn, next month I’ll share the results with you along with a list of the most visited pages on Breathing Better Living Well.

So, at BBLW we’re in the process of conducting our very first survey! And wow, what a great response so far! If you haven’t already taken the survey featured in the email sent out to you on Wednesday, July 8, go back and take a look. If you can’t find it, you can take the survey from our homepage.

Remember in addition to our terrific website, we have new blog focusing on pulmonary rehab. In our new BBLW Pulmonary Rehab blog three members of our team, Eileen, Peg and Darrell share their experiences. Don’t worry, reading about their experiences in rehab is nothing like what you see at those health clubs. You can say no to spandex and over-the-top marathon training, but ‘yes’ to wearing oxygen in your nose if you need it, because at pulmonary rehab using oxygen for you lungs is as accepted as wearing glasses for your eyes. Go to the BBLW pulmonary rehab blog on your computer – and bookmark it! Check it every day and if you don’t find a new post that very day, you will find an inspiring and encouraging message on the Wellevation Quote of the Day.

Alright… I’ve discovered a brand new word…. or at least it’s new to me…. You’ve heard of a widget, and you’ve heard of a blog, well, now there’s something called a Blidget. A Blidget is a widget (a nifty-looking link) to a blog. You can install the BBLW pulmonary rehab blog Blidget on your blog! Take a look at the Blidget at the bottom of our home page right next to my Blidget from Health Central. To install it on your blog, just click on “get blidget.” It’s easy!

Learn a lot about COPD by visiting The Lung Health Check. This new program will provide you with a report tailored to you and your needs, and help you communicate effectively with your doctor to manage COPD symptoms and stay well.

If you think crafts are only for girly girls and not young athletic men, you’ve just got to read The Story Behind the Alpha Angel. It’s all about determination in the face of severe COPD – and a story of triumph and hope. I’ve been honored to have the Alpha Angel in my home this week. How cool is that?

Lots of you have been taking a look at that terrific new product for O2 users, the O2 Tote! Just because you use supplemental oxygen doesn’t mean you can’t have great fashion style!

Stop in Wednesday afternoon, 3:00 pm East coast time at BBLW Chat and say hi. In order to join us, you must first be a member of the BBLW community, then all you have to do is click on Chat at the top of the community page, then click on General Chat, and you’re in! See you there!

Got a question about lung disease? Or maybe you’d just like a little company… you know, somebody who knows what you’re going through. Take a walk through our BBLW neighborhood, see what the gang is up to today, and say hi. Make a new friend. Everyone is welcome!

Visit our basics page for more videos with solid information on COPD. They focus on What is COPD?, Signs of COPD (includes the difference between COPD and Asthma), Preventing COPD, and Treating COPD.

I don’t know about you, but when summer rolls around, I’m ready for some escape reading! If you’re looking for some “off-topic” summer reading (I know we ALL get tired of talking about lung stuff sometimes!) visit the Just Good Books and Great Escapes section in our bookstore. Here’s a great tip I just discovered…If you click on the book title link (underlined, in blue) it will take you to Amazon, and to your choice of discounts (some really deep discounts!) on both new and used books. If you make a purchase from here penny or two will still go to help support our website. My recommendations for put-your-feet-up-and-sip-some-wine reading are: Forty Cars that Owned Me, An Enchanting Journey, and a favorite of mine, A Year By the Sea: Thoughts of an Unfinished Woman. Happy reading!

If you have a copy of Breathe Better, Live in Wellness there may be some out-of-date resources at the end of the book. I have an updated list and I’d be happy to send it to you. If you can print it out yourself, just email me by clicking on the link at the bottom of this newsletter or if you don’t have a printer, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Jane M. Martin / PO Box 2043 / Holland, MI 49422-2043.

lighthouse collection on mantelpieceLater this week my family and I will be leaving on vacation to a wonderful place, to the cottage we’ve rented a few times a year for many years. On the mantel of the old stone fireplace there we have a collection of lighthouses. Here’s a picture I took when we were there in the spring.

Thanks for letting me share this time, and a little bit of my life with you. For now, enjoy the glow… of supportive friends, simple pleasures and easy-breathing days, and I’ll see you back here again next month.
